  • brawling: Contains realistic fighting that cannot be considered martial arts-–gunfights, unorganized hand-to-hand, etc.
  • comedy: It’s funny as well as scary/violent/whatever.
  • complex plot: Film needs to be watched several times to be fully comprehended.
  • crazy people: Self-explanatory.
  • Creepy Crawly Craptosis: Contains a Sadako-style, long-haired, white-dressed han’nya crawling around even though it doesn’t really need it. (Term coined for the review of Cinderella.)
  • cursed object: Contains a handheld plot device that is cursed.
  • dystopia: Self-explanatory.
  • futuristic technology: Contains sci-fi technology.
  • ghosties: Contains a ghost or spirit of some kind.
  • gore: Contains blood and/or body parts.
  • gravity-defying martial arts: Contains wirework.
  • grudges: Self-explanatory.
  • han’nya/yurei: Contains a Sadako-style, long-haired, white-dressed han’nya crawling around that is essential to the plot.
  • haunted house: Contains a location that is cursed.
  • hwajangsil: Attempts to use toilets and/or restrooms as creepy plot devices. (Term is Korean for “toilet”, in honour of the toilet ghost of Korean folklore.)
  • jiangshi: Contains jiangshi, Chinese monsters that have elements of both zombies and vampires.
  • live-action anime: Self-explanatory.
  • magic: Contains Western-style magic.
  • ninja: Contains ninja.
  • period: Is set in a historical time period and makes some attempt at historical accuracy.
  • realistic martial arts: Does not contain wirework.
  • restaurant ravage: A restaurant gets trashed in a fight. (This is, jokingly, one of my criteria for whether or not something can really be considered a martial arts movie.)
  • revenge: Self-explanatory.
